Tollywood hero-in Indraja hails from a family of carnatic musicians from Andhra Pradesh. Indraja’s original name is Rajathi. She is the eldest of three sisters, the other two being Bharathi and Sobha. And she is more close to her youngest sister.
It was not an easy sail for her, like some of the Mumbai heroines. Indraja has had to struggle her way into Telugu tinsel world. She was first noticed in a brief cameo opposite Nagarjuna in the big hit, ‘Hello Brother’. And the film that made the industry folk sit up and take notice of her stellar performance was, Gunasekhar’s ‘Sogasu Chooda Tharama’.
There is another fact to Indraja. She is a good singer too, though the film industry is yet to tap this talent in her.
Meanwhile Indraja’s foray into Malayalam movies has been fruitful as she starred opposite big names Mohan Lal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi. She has starred in ‘Ustad’ with Mohan Lal, ‘Godman’ and ‘FIR’ with Suresh Gopi. The last two films were dubbed and released in Telugu. Indraja’s foray into Kannada films too was quite successful. Her starrer, ‘Gadabide Krishna’ opposite Sivaraj Kumar is a big hit.
However Indraja has not been able to make much headway in Tamil movies, as both her starrers - ‘Thadayam’ and ‘Rajavin Parvaile’ failed to make an impact at the box office. Though there were a couple of offers, she is waiting for the right back break to prove her mettle in Tamil films too, as she has done in Telugu.
Even during school days, she won prizes in singing and drama competitions. She trained classical dance, she leart Kuchipudi dance form Madhavapeddi Murthy, who accompanies Hemamalini and Meenakshi Seshadri in their dance shows abroad. By the way, Indraja will also be participating in a classical dance programme in the US with Murhty’s troupe. She has the utmost respect for her profession as an actress as it has given her recognition, name and fortune. Her aim in life she says is to retain this position by continuously churning out good performances.
